SummerStage Anywhere La India & La Bruja Tonight 8 pm

Summerstage, one of the events we look forward to most each summer, like many other of our faves, has had to adapt due to Covid-19. This summer, they’re bringing the stage to us via SummerStage Anywhere.

Today, Thursday, July 23rd, fans will be able to tune in for an exclusive Culture Talk with Salsa star and Latin Grammy winner La India and multifaceted performer La Bruja. The two will be taking over SummerStage’s InstagramYoutubeFacebook, and Twitch starting at 8pm ET.

Over the course of their conversation, they will be going back to their Bronx roots to discuss how their home has always supported and developed culture and music, their mutual experiences performing at SummerStage over the years, how La India has stayed focused and maintained her career, how she has been staying connected to her fans through recent months, and more.

Additional information on the event can be found here.

All summer long SummerStage will be highlighting different genres that were born in or deeply represent New York culture – Mondays: Contemporary Dance, Tuesdays: Global, Wednesdays: Indie Rock, Thursdays: Latin, Fridays: Hip Hop and Saturdays: Jazz. The SummerStage team has spent months finding ways to make the most of this summer and remains committed to bringing free, accessible, and diverse arts programming to New York City (and now the world!) Recent Latin programming includes a Salsa dance class with Ernesto & Denisse and a Weekly Beat DJ Session with DJ Lobo

SummerStage at Soundview Park

SummerStage has been entertaining Bronxites all summer with concerts in Soundview Park. A couple of weeks back they hosted GrandWizzard Theodore, & Uptown Vinyl Supreme w/  DJ Perly, The B.O.O.M. (Bronx Organic Orchestra Melinated), and the Boogie Down All-Stars. Check out some photos from the show below:

A Day at the Opera

Until Saturday, I’d never been to an opera. It was something I always thought I should do eventually, but made no real effort to go. So when I learned that the Metropolitan Opera Summer Series was happening in Williambridge Oval Park as part of SummerStage, I knew I had to check it out. Plus, it was the first time that they’ve ever performed in this park, which is pretty cool.

We’ve all seen some kind of opera on tv at some point in our lives (I am specifically thinking of this episode of Hey Arnold) but let me tell you that seeing it in person is something totally different.

Performing a variety of songs from Verdi, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Wagner (among others!)  Gabriella Reyes de Ramirez (soprano), Gerard Schneider (tenor), and Adrian Timpau (baritone)  did such an amazing job conveying the passion and conviction of each song that it didn’t matter that I didn’t actually understand what they were saying. It’s really moving and captivating, not to mention that their vocal abilities are insane.

While this was their only show in the Bronx, they have two more shows coming up in Jackie Robinson Park in Manhattan and Socrates Sculpture Park in Queens. I highly recommend checking it out if you can.
